In our last lesson we were studying the vowel sound /. Words that contain it are: man, hat, cat, bat, and, act, pattern, matter, candle, etc.

It is important to remember, though,  that vowel sounds vary a lot from country to country. It is good to practice them, because you train your mustles to produce English sounds.

After practicing /, we  were talking about books and films. Each student had to think of a book or film they had enjoyed and their classmates had to ask them the following questions:

What´s it called?

What´s it about?

Where does it take place?

Who wrote it?

Who directed it?

Who starred in it?

Who are the main characters?

Why do you like it?

We started our next topic, which is about "Career moves", but we didn´t have time to do much. In this topic we´ll be studying gerund phrases as subjects and as objects.

Some adjectives we saw we can use to describe a job are:

challenging, rewarding, boring, nerve-racking, awful

For Homework

-Write 8 sentences following instruction on pg. 9, Part A.

-Make up 5 similar  sentences choosing  the jobs yourselves.

-Since you have plenty of time until the next lesson, you may also read the conversation on Pg. 8 and write another one in the same fashion. ( Using that one as a model).

-Think of 3 unusual jobs ans say what they are about. ( You can check in the Internet if you cannot come up with any ideas).

So far we have studied the following vowel sounds: /з:/as in girl, world or urge; /I/ as in hill, bit, it or manage /i:/as in sheep, leave or meat and /e/ as in dress, spread or said.

Do practice the sentences and readings you have for each sound so you don´t forget about it.

In the lesson before we were also working on stress patterns. We saw that when   regular verbs end in a dental consonant  we add a new syllable when we make the past inflection: want-wanted, award-awarded, decide-decided. The same think happens when we have to make the plural of words that end in  consonants like /s/ /z/ or /dʒ/ (and other ones) such as class, quiz or orange or when we have to add an s for a possessive or have to make the the 3rd person in singular of a present simple tense: watch- watches.

In our last lesson we were also listening to a recording of conversations about different people: some of them were negative, some of them were positive.
As I think I did not give you enough homework, that´s something you can do: you can write a dialogue between two friends talking about a third one. After all this is something that happens quite often in real life: be creative, be funny, enjoy yourself.

Finally we were making sentences with adverb clauses including it.

I can´t stand it when  people cut in front of me in a line.

I love it when someone gives me a nice surprise.

Remember to write those sentences for homework.  Beginning with I like it, I don´t mind it, It doesn´t bother me, It makes me happy, It really upsets me, I can´t stand it.

See you next week

There is a new student in this group, WELCOME Jose Carlos.

The new vowel sound for the week is /I/: remember words like: sit, in, pick, ship, bit, women (both vowel sounds), hill, building (both vowel sounds), village, manage.

Students: you should practice at home. Remember you can listen to many words clicking on the little loudspeaker in the Oxford online dictionary. Listn and repeat, listen and repeat.

After practicing that sound students read homework.

We were practicing relative clauses, so students had to complete sentences like It would be fun to go out with a person who.... (Example: who is fun of hiking ).

We learned some adjectives to describe personalities: easygoing, independent, modest, moody, opinionated, sociable, stingy, unreliable. We were defining those adjectives.

Students had to fill in the questions for an interview and then listen to the interview itself and find out the actual questions that were asked. In this occasion it was British accent.

Homework
Tell us of someone we could say that he/she is one of those adjectives and explain why, give an example of his or her behavior to prove it.
And since we don´t have a class this week, you can use your time to read the story of Lucy, the clown doctor and make a summary of it. Also, you might write 3 questions about the text.

In our last lesson we were practicing the vowel sound /3ːl/ : some words that have this sound are: world, word, girl, bird, urge, third, nurse.

We also listened to John Something talk about his wonderful job as a paper boy. We all agreed that his was a better life than most people´s. He had an American accent so his te sound was hardly noticeable.

We started with the topic That´s what friends are for and learned what surveys show men and women usually look for in a partner. Students read a dialogue and were practicing it. New words are: arrange, a record aof achievement, leadership qualities, selflessness, playfulness.

For homework, remember tu match the sentences in column A of Ex. A with the most appropriate relative clause in column B.
